General Practice

Lead: Professor David Weller, James MacKenzie Professor of General Practice

The University of Edinburgh department of General Practice grew out of a long history in the local area, of provision of community based health care (from 1776), and clinical teaching. The University of Edinburgh set up a 'teaching general practice' in 1948, and a Department of General Practice in 1956, the first in the world. In 1963 a Chair in General Practice was founded, again the first in the world. Professor Weller is the 3rd holder of that Chair. Together with colleagues in other Scottish Medical Schools, he is actively involved in promoting undergraduate and postgraduate education in General Practice and in building capacity in academic primary care.
